RESEARCH PROJECT
Arequipa, Peru
II. What is Archaeological
Survey?

- How archaeological sites are first found.
- Possibly for some sites will see future
excavation, but surface distributions are also very interesting.
- Surveyor Spacing = 10 to 15m
- GPS unit on either end of survey line
- When site is found everyone stops to record site
Decide on how to cover

|
Decide on transect daily. This transect involves 5 people
spaced 15m apart.
Surveyors line up and walk a compass bearing, keeping 15m
between them. They are looking at the ground for
artifacts.
|
At the end of the transect surveyors will turn around and
line up 15m from the last pass.
