UPPER COLCA

UPPER COLCA ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROJECT
Arequipa, Peru

II. What is Archaeological Survey?

- How archaeological sites are first found.

- Possibly for some sites will see future excavation, but surface distributions are also very interesting.

- Surveyor Spacing = 10 to 15m

- GPS unit on either end of survey line

- When site is found everyone stops to record site

Decide on how to cover given area:

Ancachita caldera survey area

Decide on transect daily. This transect involves 5 people spaced 15m apart.

Surveyors line up and walk a compass bearing, keeping 15m between them. They are looking at the ground for artifacts.

At the end of the transect surveyors will turn around and line up 15m from the last pass.
